Falling Dominoes Art For Happy New Year

Just a quick follow-up to my initial domino video to say season's greetings and happy new year.

With this second video I wanted to be more personal, but I also really wanted to see if I could get the dominoes to hit bells and play a song.

And of course, there's no better time of year for bell songs than the holiday season. I specifically chose "Carol of the Bells" because it's not just a Christmas song. Believe it or not, its origin goes back to an old pagan New Year's chant from the Ukraine.

So with that, I hope you enjoy it, and again happy holidays.

The Hubble Ultra Deep Field in 3D




"I've recently discovered an animation that was rendered using the measured redshift of all 10,000 galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image.

I've written a short script that leads you through a quick history of both deep field images and this video ends with a fly-through of the Ultra Deep Field.

Every galaxy in the image is in its proper distance as viewed from the telescope line of sight.

As if this image wasn't amazing enough."

Sculpting in Solid Mercury with Liquid Nitrogen

What you consider solid, liquid or gas depends entirely on where you live. For example, men from cold, cold Mars might build their houses out of ice. Women from Venus, where the average temperature is about 870°F, could bathe in liquid zinc.

We think mercury is a liquid metal, but it’s all relative. At one temperature, the mercury atoms arrange themselves into a solid crystal; at another, they flow freely around each other as a liquid. Children from Pluto (like mine, for example) could happily cast their toy soldiers out of mercury, because on that frigid planet it is a solid, malleable metal a lot like tin. Here on temperate Earth, you need a stove to cast tin, but a tank of liquid nitrogen to make mercury figurines.

liquid-nitrogen temperature, about –320°F, mercury acts like any other metal: You can hammer it, file it, saw it. (It won't shatter like other liquid-nitrogen-frozen items because there's not enough moisture inside.) Watching it solidify is exactly like watching tin harden from a molten state. As the atoms go from liquid to solid crystal form, you see the surface pucker. And because mercury, like most metals, shrinks when it solidifies, you see the surface sink in areas, forming a patchwork characteristic of cast metal.

The fun of making frozen mercury trinkets is another reason to lament the fact that this marvelous metal is also an insidious poison that must be handled carefully and never spilled. Schools have been evacuated because of one broken mercury thermometer, and mercury in the environment, particularly in fish, is a major public-health concern. Which is, of course, why I made this cute little mercury fish.

The Making Of 3D Street Art Painting




In Dun Laoghaire the "Festival of World Culture" took place from 21. to 24. of August 2008. Edgar Müller has followed the invitation and continued his series of large-sized 3D Street Art there. For this year's Festival of World Cultures renowned German street painting artist Edgar Müller transformed a huge slice of the East Pier into a dramatic ice age scene. This project was supported by the Goethe Institution Germany.

Video Of Ship's Voyage In The River, Made From 2,000 Photographs!

A time lapse video made by setting a camera to take photos at six second intervals during a trip outbound on the Houston Ship Channel. I used Quicktime to assemble over 2000 individual photos into a 3 minute movie representing an actual time of over 3 1/2 hours. The ship was only moving at 5-6 knots for the first half of the trip and up to 10 knots in the open areas away from the docks. The journey begins just below the Port of Houston turning basin at the end of the channel and continues down to Morgan's Point at the head of Galveston Bay. We still had 32 miles to go to get out to the pilot station in the Gulf of Mexico at that point. The ship is a Panamax tanker 600 feet long by 106 feet wide.
